Why you should NOT buy an iPhone on Verizon (Yet)

I hated history in school, but I did learn history does repeat itself. In 2007 Apple released the iPhone and changed everything. 2008 came along and so did the iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3GS was released in 2009 and the iPhone 4 dropped last year in 2010. All of these phones are (as of this post) exclusively available on at&t in the United States until February 10 2011. On that date Verizon will gain access the most popular phone in the world and 4 months later Apple will release the iPhone (5,4GS,WickedAwesomeCoolNewPhone) and everyone who bought the iPhone 4 for Verizon will be out in the cold, with an outdated phone. History will repeat itself this summer and Apple will release a new iPhone, but will you hold out that long?

Or will you stick it out with at&t? Verizon has a better voice network for sure, but the grass is rarely greener on the other side. Not to mention if you are in a contract with either carrier and thinking about jumping ship. Early termination fee's aren't cheap, plus you have the cost of the new phone and activation charges.

GSM and UMTS (what at&t uses and t-mobile for that matter) technology is widely used worldwide. This makes UMTS ideal for international use. UMTS phones use a SIM card that can be easily switched between handsets. i.e. you go fishing and don't want to drop your iPhone in the lake so you switch your SIM card into a cheap handset. Verizon uses CDMA and while having some advantages for voice calling, there aren't really any other advantages. (read it's old Tech) Generally Verizon will drop less calls, and no one knows yet what network impact the Verizon iPhone will have on its network. At&t has the biggest advantage with there data network, it's around two times faster than Verizon's 3G network and supports a widely popular (and at&t's advertising push) simultaneous voice and data. This allows you to connect to the Internet for whatever reason while still maintaining a voice conversation.

This year Verizon and at&t will be working on the next bigger and faster network called LTE. Both companies working towards the same network will ultimately allow the consumer to eventually use whatever phone they want on whatever network they want to use it on. For now you must make a choice, and if your choice leads you to Verizon will you hold out till summer or give in immediately and pick up a shiny new iPhone February 10, 2011?
