A few weeks back (August 23rd to be exact) an earthquake struck Virginia. The 5.8 magnitude quake occurred in Mineral, VA, a little less than 4 miles under the ground. People from South Carolina all the way up to Canada felt it! I was in a teaming room on the 3rd floor at TMA on the phone with the lovely student loan folks getting some junk straight and things started to shake a little. I thought at first it was a food cart, but then it didn't stop and got harder (okay, not like knocking me off my feet), but enough to know it was a bomb/earthquake/building collapse. I quickly got the student loan girl off the phone and went out into the hallway where everyone was confused. We figured out at that point that it must be an earthquake and evacuated the building. We found out later you are NOT supposed to evacuate the building (oops!), but better yet - go into a doorway and hang tight for at least 30 seconds after the shaking stops. There was no significant damage in Richmond/Central VA. Mineral/Louise had some pretty extensive damage - so bad that they are on a pretty horrible school schedule since only one school is available. The Washington Monument had some cracking, and is closed indefinitely, they aren't sure if it will reopen. The National Cathedral also had some bad damage.
So, where were YOU during the massive earthquake 2k11??
